Hello I am Kat.
I am one of seven kids and sadly one of us is missing, my brother Anthony.
Anthony, or Tony as my siblings and I call him, has been missing since July 2013. Its heartbreaking, its hard to talk about and it feels like the pain will never end. I think the not knowing is the worst. Is he safe? Does he have shelter when its raining? Does he know we love him? Is he still with us..? The guilt of thinking ‘what more could I have done’ or ‘how did this happen?’ is relentless.
Second to the heartbreak is the feeling of not being able to do enough. Do we pack up and go on the road looking for Anthony? We have been advised against this by families who have done that. It’s like looking for a needle in a haystack. Tony is a registered missing person and all we know is that in July 2013 he got on a bus from Canberra to Sydney and has not been seen or used his bank accounts since.
My Gofundme is not to raise money to necessarily help find Tony specifically, but to help the not-for-profit organization, Australian Missing Persons Register, continue their work and support all the families going through what mine is. People don’t know what to say or do when I tell them my brother is missing… but this is something that you can do to help- keep support organizations like this one going.
I am about to walk approximately 800kms across Spain on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. My reasons for walking are largely personal but it also feels like a luxury to just up and go walkabout for a month. So I dedicate my walk to my brother and to raising funds to help the Australian Missing Persons Register. And if I don’t make it to Santiago due to simply not having the stamina or willpower, I will match what I have fundraised. But I plan on making it.
Thank you to all my friends, family and strangers who have given me a shoulder to cry on over the last three years. Everyone has struggles in their lives and this one is my family’s.
