Katie's Trifecta
Katie Riegel Urban is a strong person but the past several months have shown just how strong she is. Her story details her strength of mind in the face of adversity, self-control amidst a sea of uncertainty, and positivity when none should be found, all through her struggle for survival.
In November 2013 Katie was pregnant with her third child and began experiencing complications with her pregnancy. She was diagnosed with a severe form of Placenta Previa, called Placenta Percreta. This is a rare condition in which the placenta grows through the uterine wall, often attaching to other organs in the body. Katie was admitted to Beth Israel Hospital on December 14, 2013.
Given the severity of the Placenta Percreta she was put on bed rest and remained in the hospital until the baby was born. Her due date was originally April 2014. With two boys at home, Liam, 16 months and Jack, 3.5 years old, this was very difficult to hear. She took the news in stride knowing that she needed to take care of herself and the tiny miracle she was carrying.
On February 3, 2014 Katie underwent an emergency C-section and little Rory was born. Her surgery stretched for 12 hours, and 172 units of blood products were used to save her life. That is equivalent to the blood volume of 17 people. She endured two more surgeries and a stay in ICU until her critical condition stabilized. She was finally able to go home in April 2014.
Subsequent procedures and surgery have meant a prolonged recovery and added stress on her and her young family. All money raised will go directly to Katie and Matt for their family's use. Please help us support Katie, Matt and their "Trifecta" Jack, Liam and Rory!
