The Story
Katie is a sweet 10-yr old girl, who loves playing Lacrosse and Soccer.

She was diagnosed with metastatic Ewing Sarcoma on 8/23/17.  She had surgery on 8/18 to remove 2 tumors on her spine.  Ewing's is a very aggressive bone cancer which needs an aggressive chemo plan. Her main tumor was in her spine but it did spread to other locations: lungs, spine, pelvis and bone marrow.  She was lucky it was discovered that night or she most likely would never have walked again. She spent over 2 weeks at Morristown Hospital, NJ recovering from this surgery. Katie is now doing chemo down at CHOP in Philadelphia, PA. She's been also approved to receive a trial treatments that may or may not be covered by insurance.

The Details of Treatment
After 12 weeks of receiving chemotherapy treatment starting at Morristown, NJ and transferring to Philadelphia, PA at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Katie received scans and an MRI to evaluate her progress. Fortunately, Katie’s treatment seems to be working and shrinking the tumors.

The next phase of Katie’s treatment is going to continue with chemotherapy and add on radiation five days a week. Katie has begun radiation similar to an X-Ray, on her lungs that will entail 8 sessions. The radiology team will then use Proton radiation on Katie’s spine over the course of 26 visits. Proton radiation is an advanced form of radiation that helps minimize damaging any healthy tissue.

The chemo as an in patient, is performed at CHOP and the radiation is two buildings down as an out patient at U. Penn. A typical radiation session takes only 20 minutes and Katie doesn’t feel anything. Unfortunately, the radiation does weaken the body on top of what the chemotherapy is already doing.

The Costs...
There will be a lot of driving back and forth from NJ to PA over the next 9 months. Days that two radiation sessions are close together, Katie will probably stay in a hotel to minimize hours of travel time.

As you can all see, the overall expenses related to the treatment but also to the family's care for Katie, transportation to and from the hospital, logistics, stays in hotels, meals will and are adding up.
