”The Bickerson’s” as they are known to by many are Kadi and Paul! They have a rare neurogenic disease called Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia.  They are both dependent on the use of their wheelchairs for mobility.  Their HSP is progressive and has mainly affected their legs along with some decreased use of their arms, bladders, bowels and intellectual development.  For Paul it has also affected his speech and currently starting to affect his respiratory system. Paul started with symptoms at age 14. Kadi started with symptoms around the age of 29. It’s pretty terrible to watch the progression of this disease take away parts of my children.  It has not taken away their beautiful spirits though! I don’t think it can!! They are both my hero’s. They are filled with grace & a fighting force. “The  Bickerson’s “ got their Knick name via sibling quarreling. They are absolutely hysterical together and know how to push each other’s buttons!!! 

Kadi has always enjoyed watching and playing basketball & softball. She is also very good at drawing and flower arranging. She has a good eye for design.  Kadi would like to join an area gym that is designed for people who have physical disabilities. The gym is set up so she wouldn’t have to transfer out of her wheelchair to use the weight machines.  They also have various adaptive sports that she can learn and become more active & social again. She has also mentioned possibly taking some adult education arts & crafts classes.  Kadi works part time in a gift shop with a supportive job coach. 

Paul enjoys watching live sports, fishing, video games and music of all types. He used to enjoy playing golf with his uncle and cousins. He is thinking about joining the gym as well hoping to meet new people. He is currently looking for a job. He is a very social young man & enjoys talking with people of all ages. 

The reason I am saying “Uncle” and asking for help is that I have my own health issues that landed me in the hospital for nearly a month & a half last year. I was out of work for 6 months. Needless to say that has been a big financial burden. It is not easy to ask for help but simply put, I’m tired and now humble. 

The main goal is to purchase Paul an electric hoyer lift for transfers. Electric because I want to be able to use it as well as his amazing aides.  The electric is less physically demanding and easier to use. The total cost is around $6,250.00 for the lift & slings. One sling for regular transfers & the other for showering & toileting. Paul needs one now and Kadi will need her own in the future. If there is any money left over, I would use it towards fun things that The Bickerson’s enjoy doing! They really are both great  people!
