KIPP Believe Civil Rights Tour 2017

Donation protected
Help our 7th graders experience famous sites from Civil Rights history to affirm and reclaim their heritage.

The elevation of Stone Mountain, located near Atlanta, Georgia is 1,686 feet. With a solid breakfast and a bottle of water, you could hike to the peak before lunchtime.

100 years ago, African Americans did not climb up this mountain; they were dragged up.

The Ku Klux Klan made the summit of Stone Mountain a secret meeting spot. At night, dressed in their hooded white robes, they burned crosses, performed chants, and lynched African Americans.

Much has happened since then. The mountains of slavery, of Jim Crow, of white-hooded nightriders, and of de jure segregation have been climbed. But there are still so many mountains before our students.

In recent years, the 7th grade class of KIPP Believe College Prep (New Orleans, LA) has had the opportunity to make this climb at the end of a four day tour of Civil Rights history in the South. Believers visit historically black universities, walk the Edmund Pettus bridge in Selma, see the Martin Luther King, Jr. museum, experience historic sites in Atlanta, and end by making the climb up Stone Mountain's peak - reclaiming the mountain for their ancestors. They do it because it is hard to climb a mountain. They do it to learn how to cooperate and encourage their teammates. They do it to honor those who climbed before them.

If you can, please donate to help fund our students' Civil Rights tour that will take place in May 2017. We have fallen short of our budget this year, but we know this experience is too important to cut. We are grateful for any amount you can give!
