What is Just Listening Community?

A free community space creating connection for a person in distress, crisis, suicidal or with an important story to share

A safe, therapeutic environment for people in emotional crisis as a meaningful alternative to other services

Trained community members listening and connecting to the experiences of any person who visits

Just Listening ethos:  you are exactly where you need to be for human connection...

 ...when in distress

...before taking a drug

...before taking action towards ending your own life

...whenever you need, as often as you need

...when reaching out for support

...when reaching in to offer support towards mutual healing

The project will provide support to people in distress and crisis, including people feeling suicidal and people who are isolated. In providing an alternative place to find support and connection, the Just Listening Community means people will not have to attend the emergency department and wait for long periods to get support and will have a community based and led alternative support network.
The purpose developed environment and building will provide moments of refuge for people to be welcomed by mutual community members, offering deep listening, acceptance and value of each person that reaches of out for connection at times of distress.

More information can be found at www.justlistening.com.au. Just Listening is a model that can be set up and delivered in any community.

Just Listening provides training to individuals and community to build capacity and to provide support to one another.

A sample of the training can be watched here:
 here.
The training provided to volunteers in the Just Listening Community is provided over 6 sessions with ongoing support provided to volunteers.

How much is a valuable donation:

Any amount donated to the Just Listening Project is greatly valued.  Recognising that we all have different resources we appreciate all donation.  From .50 cents to no limit would be a good amount!

Two local community members Matt and Andi will be running a 24 hour marathon in July 2021 (more information below)  to raise money for the Just Listening Community. Some people like to think about sponsoring an amount per hour. Or you might wish to raise funds in your office or work place or friendship group as a collective donation.

If you are not in a position to offer monetary donations, we would be equally valuing of you sharing the link to this Go Fund Me campaign  ( https://gofund.me/5e058721 )

How will the donation be spent:

Money raised will be spent specifically on delivery of the Just Listening Community.  This will primarily be funding staffing to support volunteers, train community volunteers and provide ongoing project support and community development.  The money raised will be held and allocated by Community Health Onkaparinga  - a registered charity with a proven record of community service in  the local area.

If we meet funding targets, the Just Listening Project will also deliver a post crisis suicide response to individuals, facilitating the Suicide Narratives approach for individuals.

After facilitating the Just Listening Community for 12 months Humane Clinic will provide an 'how to' document for free, including how to set up, deliver and support a Just Listening Community in any community that wishes to develop their own version of the model in their community.

Why is the project so important:

This project is vital in a time when mental health services are not providing the humane connection and support to members of our communities in distress. The project aims to build capacity in the community to support one another and build healthy hopeful and connected communities - a project that can be replicated in any community.
In short, the project will provide a meaningful alternative to the community to support with emotional distress and well being through connection and mutuality.

This is a unique project that sits outside of the mental health services, placing it  in the hands and hearts of the community who will support one another.  People trained to offer listening are volunteers in the local community and will be supported by the Humane Clinic staff. We are excited to let you know we already have dozens of volunteers attending training in preparation for the launch of JLC in May 2021.

We have been generously donated a building and Humane Clinic has funded staff to deliver over 18 months  work on the developing the Just Listening Community project.

Community Health Onkaparinga and Humane Clinic have been working towards delivering this project since the idea was first discussed at a community meeting in 2016.  It is finally coming to reality and happening and you can help.

Running to raise money

Matt and Andi will be running the Adelaide 24 Hour Marathon in July 2021 to raise money for this unique project. The run in Adelaide includes continuous running of 2.2km loops for the full 24 hours!  They will both run over 100km to raise money for the Just Listening Community.  By sponsoring Matt and Andi you are contributing to change in the way we offer support to people with mental and emotional distress.  for more info about the running event: Adelaide 24 Hour

Matt and Andi !

Please support these incredible community volunteers and us in donating for this important community project that we hope will provide an invaluable resource for connection for people in distress and build the capacity of community to respond to those community members in distress.
