Julia's Last Flight

Donation protected
Our daughter Julia earned her wings on September 6th 2013.

She was born in October 14th 2010 with a congenital heart defect named Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. She basically had half of her heart. She underwent two open heart surgeries and after the second one we learned she had Kabuki Syndrome. A rare unpublished disorder discovered in the 80's that occurs in approximately 1 in 32,000 newborns and is caused by mutations in the MML2 gene.

As difficult and stressful as it seems, we enjoyed every minute with her. We tried to do “normal” things and activities. In her short life against the odds, she learned to crawl and then walk and eat by mouth! All of these, thanks to the therapies we attended 4 times a week and weekly visits to different doctors.

Meanwhile we tried to pay all the medical bills by the due dates. We had a very good health insurance and with the help and support from our family we thought we could make it.

Until the unexpected happened in September 6th 2013 Julia started to cry in the middle of the night with a strong abdominal pain, all of a sudden she began having trouble breathing, we called 911 and they transported us to the near hospital in Denton. She was very ill, the doctors told us. We had to move her to Medical City Children's Hospital in Dallas. We didn't have time. The only way she could make it was by air ambulance.
When we arrived there, they couldn't do anything.
Her life ended in the same hospital I delivered her surrounded by our loving doctors and nurses.

And after our tragedy, the medical bills started arriving, we knew that would happen. Until we received the bill from the air ambulance which our insurance didn't cover: $21,000 dollars.

It's been a year now and my husband Mauricio, who is a hard working man, has been doing anything humanly possible to cover that air ambulance bill, but life goes on and other "normal" expenses keep coming resulting in a tsunami of debts.

I never thought I would ask this, but seeing my husband so stressed out, I decided to ask for help. And things happen for a reason, this morning reading my local news magazine; I ran into this Go Fund Me campaign about a woman asking for help to rebuild her bakery after it was vandalized in the riots of St. Louise, MO.
So many kind people from all over the world had helped her exceeding the goal of funds she was asking for!
So why not ask for help ourselves.
