So- I don't know how to do this... Raised with a father who dedicated his life to the ministry and a mother who whipped us into shape when he was traveling for work... my sisters and I were raised to be both servants to others and capable on our own. Asking for help is not what we're comfortable with. But here goes.
My sister, Judi, has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. And she needs help paying for the treatment she needs. She has worked in service to others and the community her whole career. She worked first as a juvenile probation officer, returned to school, and is now an addictions therapist at a community mental health agency. She works hard with a lot of heart to do what is best for her clients. She takes on part-time jobs to supplement her income, as it does not always stretch to where she needs it. But she does so with little complaint because it still puts her where she loves to be: helping others.
But, if you ask anyone- and I mean anyone- who has met her what Judi is all about, they would say, her son, Sam. Years ago, Judi thought her life would not be complete without a child and she fought hard emotionally and physically to become a mother. And now, almost 14 years later, she was right. She wasn't complete without him.
Living as a single mother of a (very) active boy has kept her very busy, mostly broke, but always grateful. And her gratitude for life has allowed her to be generous to others in so many ways.
Now that she needs help- her family and friends are willing and able to help with running Sam to sports practice, helping him with homework, cooking meals, cleaning house, raking leaves, and sitting with her during chemotherapy and when she's feeling sick. The struggle lies in how to make a dent in her copays and deductibles that will max out by the end of the year and start again in mid-treatment- when her budget is already tight.
So here I am, doing the uncomfortable, asking for help from anyone and everyone, even those I will never be able to repay or thank enough. Please help her out, as you can, or send a kind word of encouragement- and know that we are ever grateful.
