My friend, Jonathan Kelly Ford is waiting for a second chance at life. He first saw signs of illness a few years ago. An incredibly active and fit person, suddenly Jonathan noticed his belly bloating and appetite decreasing. Soon after, he had trouble breathing and eventually could no longer climb the stairs. After months of testing, his pulmonary specialist thought he might have a rare genetic disease, transthyretin (TTR) amyloidosis. The disease usually doesn’t manifest in someone so young, but a genetic test revealed that Jonathan inherited a double marker, when most only inherit one. Immediately after the diagnosis, he needed to have a pacemaker implanted, which he has had for over a year. Now doctors say a heart transplant is critical to his survival.

After being on the heart transplant list for 6 months, Jonathan has just received his new heart on Monday 3/5/18.

Although this time should be concentrated on healing and recovery for Jonathan and his wife, Didi, it will now be spent on worrisom thoughts like , "how are we going to pay for all of the bills incurred over the last six months?"

Jonathan will have to find a place to live for 3 months as he has to be within a 5 mile radius of the hospital, which is located in San Francisco. Jonathan and Didi live a 3 hour drive away.
