Joi's Summer Fund

Donation protected
My name is Joi Massat, and I'm a student at Emory University majoring in English/Creative Writing and considering a Japanese minor.

I started this campaign because I needed to raise funds for a study-abroad program in Osaka, but plans fell through and the money you've given me is still sitting in savings. While I feel flaky for not putting the funds toward their intended purpose, rest assured that nothing is being spent frivolously -- after the initial $135 that paid for my passport, the money is going toward my education.

Because the plan to study in Japan for the summer of 2018 didn't work out, I'm instead using most of the funds you've given me to take an educational visit to the museums and monuments in Washington, D.C. with my mother. We're especially interested in visiting the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Some of the money is going toward applications to graduate school. I'm applying to Creative Writing MFA programs at 4-6 schools, including NYU and  Northwestern University. Application fees run high; I can expect to pay $100 per school. I am truly grateful for the financial security you've given me.

While I'm still deeply invested in my Japanese studies and will continue through my senior year and beyond, my career interests in publishing come first.

Thanks again, to all of you, for your support!
