now, is a filmmaker, John McTiernan.
You know his work even if you don't know his name. And despite anything you may have heard, I promise that you don't know the full story behind why he is where he is.
Imagine being at home having dinner one evening with your kids. You're handed the phone, respond politely to the caller who you think just might be a journalist because they have called before... parading as some form of law enforcement to get a juicy story.
But you find out later it was really the FBI "“ no face to face, no badges, no ID, just a phone call, from a stranger, even though their own manual says they have to identify themselves to you.
Imagine then being prosecuted for that phone call in a case where the government not only misrepresented its so-called evidence, but the laws themselves.
Imagine living in a world where anything you said, at any time, could potentially be used against you because federal agents no longer have to follow their own rules.
So you fight back for seven years - seven years in which you were kept from practicing your profession: while the legal bills kept coming and coming. And coming . . . because the battle is still not over.
As John would tell you himself, he started this fight with every advantage an individual citizen could hope for. Resources that have been whittled and whittled away. He fought this fight for all of us... to keep the judge from changing the law. Now he needs help"”not just to come home, but also to keep fighting this miscarriage of justice.
When the government abuses the power it holds over any one of us, it abuses the trust of us all. But it also creates an opportunity: an opportunity for us to come together and insist"”with one voice"”that our criminal justice system actually be a system of justice. I'm asking you to take that opportunity now.
