Evelyn & Johnnie Raines Hardship

Donation protected
The last six months have changed Johnny and Evelyn's lives. It was July when Evelyn finally got information on an illness she had been suffernig from for years. Despite insight, no doctor was willing to move forward with surgery due to the possible complications associated with the procedure. Pain was persistant and mobility was limited to the point that Evelyn was not able to work. This is a lady that served 22 years in the English department at Virginia Tech prior to returning to school at 50 to become a CNA. Finally, on December 11th, she underwent surgery. Unfortunately, she is out of work for an additional 6 weeks.
To make matters worse, Johnnie, her beloved husband suffered a massive stroke that nearly ended his life. Leading up to the stroke, Days leading up to the trajedy, as Johnnie did frequently, Johnnie was volunteering a days work to a family friend in Floyd. While working with his grandson Bradley, his leg went numb. Bradley urged him to go to the doctor immediately. Once at the doctors office, it was assumed that it was nerve damage or possibly from his wallet being in his back pocket. Thankfully, he was refered to a neurologists for an appointment the following Monday. That morning, he was given a CT Scan. The scan revealed a series of prior ministrokes that likely led to the numbness among other symptoms. The doctor gave Johnnie a dose of asprin and sent him to the hospital immediately for further evaluations. When they called his name, it hit him. Fortunately, he and his grandson saw the signs, reacted properly and promtly, and was seen by a health care provider almost immediately. Unfortunately, he  was misdiagnosed initially. Luckily for Johnnie, the Neurologist suggested a CT scan which led to an immediate referral to the hospital.  Without the referral, Johnnie likely wouldn't be here today. A month ago, Johnnie was unable to walk or talk and the left side was paralyzed. A week ago, he started talking again, and yesterday, he started to wiggle his toes. He has told us all his goal is to be walking again by Chrstmas!
Evelyn has served the English department at Ve Tech for what seems like a lifetime, Johnnie has been a hand man in the NRV all his life. These are people that would gladly give you the shirt off their back, time out of their day, and money out of their pockets without thought. I can contest. In addition, Johnnie would donate wood to the needy, while Evelyn has dedicated much of her time to Hospice care for the terminally ill. It's time we as a community pay it forward.
For nearly 6 months, Evelyn has been physically unable to work. To make matters worse, for over a month now, Johnnie too has been without an income. As we all know, Social Security honestly isn't enough to keep this ship a float. Survival is a blessing but the financial hardship these medical conditions have led to have put the family in a tough spot. Their grandson has been providing the essential care that is required in this time of need and also unable to work. All financial contributions will go directy to support the household. For those unable to contribute financially, physical and emotional contributions, as well as donations are also welcomed. Small or large, physical or spiritual, God bless each and every sole.
