Most of you may know, or have noticed his absence, but our dear friend and biggest supporter, John Tumaua, has been diagnosed with MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndrome).
His blood levels are way below normal...especially white cells. Right now, he just finished with his first round of chemo treatment. He said that it went well. Chemo is to help kill the bad cells (blasts) and to increase white cells in order to replenish healthy cells in his immune system. Chemo treatments may take around 3 months. It depends on how his body reacts to the treatments. John goes for blood lab tests 2 times a week. Once his blood count is up to par, he will start on a bone marrow transplant. This could be 2-4 months. John’s 3 siblings are in the process of being tested for bone marrow match...maybe one of them... or all of them are a match :-) Fingers crossed! It's a slow long road ahead.
In John’s words, “I'm just taking one day at a time. But, hopefully I'll be able to return to work in couple of weeks... should be no problem working while I'm on chemo. I just have to be more cautious...” His doctors prefer it if he isn’t around crowds of people because his immune system is jeopardized. He will have to wear a mask at all times when leaving the house.
John is very positive, along with his friends and family, and we know, in his words “we WILL beat this disease."
John has had to take some time off work, and will probably incur some extra expenses because of this illness. In an effort to help out we have created this page to lend our wonderful friend a helping hand. Any and all donations will go directly to John to help with these added expenses. This is just a small way to show our incredible support for such an incredible man. We KNOW that he WILL beat this, and we will do anything we can to be there for him during this time.
