Stroke Rehab for Joe Sagala

On December 3, 2015, just 1 week after celebrating our 32nd wedding anniversary, while on our way to a doctor appointment in Chicago, after pulling into a parking place, I turned to speak to Joe and realized that something was seriously wrong. He was unable to speak, focus his eyes or respond to questions. EMS were quickly contacted and transported him to Mount Sinai ER for emergency treatment. Following this life saving treatment he was moved to ICU for continued monitoring and testing to find out the extent of damage to his body from this stroke.  Due to complications in his health and care, his weight dropped to under 125#. His normal healthy weight is about 150#. While we are trying to help rebuild his body weight and strength, Joe is doing everything in his power to work with whatever the doctors ask of him.
Days were spent in ICU, with some progress he was moved into another room with less monitoring. After 10 days in Mount Sinai Hospital, he was moved to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago in Dyer, located in the Franciscan Hospital of St. Margaret South. Joe was there until January 9th when based on doctors evaluation we were able to have him moved to Symphony of Dyer, an intensive Rehabilitation facility. He is participating in Speach therapy, Occupational therapy and Physical Therapy seven days per week, approximatedly 3 hours per day.
As days pass, as difficult and painful as the constant rehabilitation is, Joe never slows down, he just continues to work at whatever task he's been given to do.
While we've been able to determine how limited he is by the loss of use of his left side, he has been working hard  and has been able to get some movement with assistance.
Under the rules of Medicare, Joe is allowed to be in an assisted care facility for up to 100 days.  However, only the first 20 days are covered at 100%, starting with day 21 we have to begin paying $161.00 per day.  My goal is to raise as much money as I can to buy additional time for Joe at Symphony to give him the best chance at regaining use of his left side.  Joe is doing everything in his power to work as hard as he can to try to regain strength and use of his body.  He is determined to try to fill the need in our son Andy's life.  Andy is 13 years old and in the 8th grade.  This is a critical age for him to have access to his Dad, to be able to interact with his Dad on a regular basis.
Our goal is to have Joe regain enough strength and use of his body that he can live at home again with us.  With the limitations I have due to all of my surgeries, I am unable to lift Joe and provide the level of care that he needs.  Our prayer is to have our family put back together, so that we can work together and have a chance to continue to be husband and wife, and fill our role as parents to our son.
Any funds that are donated will be used to pay for additional days of Therapy for Joe and to purchase braces and equipment not covered by Medicare to assist Joe in his efforts to regain use of his body.
Please visit my Facebook page to take a look at our family, I'm sure you will see that we are blessed to have something very special, and it is worth the efforts to preserve our family.
