My name is Kerrie Stanley. I am Joe Kings Aunt. I am raising money for Joe, so he can get an embroidery machine he wants so he can start up his own business for embroidery and screen print.
On September 19, 2012 Joes life changed in a moment. He was driving on a work errand when the ignition in his truck suddenly turned off and he lost all control of his pickup. The truck flipped several times, hit three telephone poles and landed on its roof. Joe was air lifted to Maine Med. After many hours of waiting we were given the news. Joe was paralyzed from the waist down. He had damage to vertabrae c-3, c-4 and c-5. Joe spent one month at Maine Med then was transported to Spaulding Rehab in Boston. Joe spent two and half months at Spaulding to help him adapt to his new life.
Since Joe has left Spaulding its been one set back after the next. He has suffered many bacterial infections, UTI's, and bladder infections. He has had several bouts with kidney stones. Joe has also had many issues with regulating his blood pressure. At times it drops so low, he completely passes out. In December of 2013, Joe started a wound in his groin area. He has been to and from the Doctors more times that we can count to address this wound. Even though he has excellent care the wound continued to get bigger and bigger. On Mothers Day 2014, Joe was admitted to the hospital. During this stay Joe suffered an infection and due to complications from the infection, he flat lined. The doctors had to resuscitate Joe. He pulled through. Having the determination Joe has, He made it to his Senior Prom one week later. Two weeks there after he graduated high school with the class of 2014. Amazing!
In September of 2014, Joe once again ended up in the hospital to address his wound. After going to an appointment to assess his wound, he was notified by his Doctor he would need to be transferred to Mass General immediately.
Once Joe arrived in Boston he was seen by a team of twelve doctors for a week. After a week of constanct testing he told he was going to need surgery on his wound and there was a possibility of amputation. This was a really rough time for Joe. You see, Joe has smiled throughout this whole ordeal. He is a practical joker. Always laughing, smiling and cracking jokes. This time was different. Joe endured a hospital stay of three weeks and two major surgeries and many days and nights of being poked and prodded. It was none stop. One of Joes surgeries, the big one, consisted of him having to have the ball joint removed from his hip. Yes, he had to have his hip bone removed. So as of now he has no hip bone. It is not certain if the infection in the hip bone caused the wound or if the wound caused the infection in his hip bone. Never the less, Joe is currently under a 12 week course of anti biotics. Joe is now home still recovering from his surgery. He still continues to do his physical therapy inspite of all he has been throgh.
Joe was and is a VERY active guy. He doesn't like to sit idle for very long. He likes to always be doing something. His mind is always turning trying to think of things to do to pass the time. Due to his hip bone being removed it limits what his activities are. At this time he is not able to participate in many activites that he had planned on joining due to his ball joint being removed.
Joe has always had a passion for art and design. He has been drawing since he was a little guy. He started by drawing trucks and equipment and his passionsfor art grew from there. Joe has many drawings that he has created over the years. All with his distinct style and vison.
During his senior year of high school Joe took a screen print embroidery class. Joe found a new love. Screen print and embroidery gave Joe a new passion. Something he could do that he became very good at. Since graduating he no longer has access to the hobby he grew to love. So Joe being Joe spent a lot of time thinking about what he wanted to do since out of high school. He has decided a screen print and embroidery business is what he would like to start up.
That is what has led me to tell Joes story. Joe has been through so so much since the day his life changed dramatically in 2012. He has had one set back after the next, all the while keeping that sharp, witty, keen sense of humor. Always that smile that literally lights up a room. Joe has worked so hard to get to this stage in his recovery. I feel that if we can get this embroidery machine for him it will give him a new out look, something he can focus on that is positive, and can encourage is own creativity. This will allow Joe to have something of his own, independence.
