My younger brother, Joe Jenkins, has been battling liver disease NAFLD / NASH (Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease /nonalcoholic steatohepatitis) for around four years in silence. Joe didn’t want to worry others, hoping the liver would improve, but things didn’t go as planned. His illness has caused many hospital stays for Lymphedema in his legs, Ascites in the abdomen and now Hepatic Encephalopathy ("poisons" build up in the bloodstream and affects the function of the nervous system). His body continues to retain fluids and he must work to keep his ammonia levels from building up. At this point the only curative measure is a complete liver transplant. Joe completed his screenings and was officially added to the National Liver Transplant list on 11/15/17. Joe has good days and bad days, but always manages to put a smile on my face with his witty personality. Love that crazy boy!!!
Joe had to take a leave from his job at Bellaire Police Department to fight this battle, but looks forward to his return, after his healing. Thank you to City of Bellaire, Bellaire PD (Brother’s in Blue-BPOA) and the Neuhaus Education Center for your support and understanding.
Joe has worked as an officer for the Bellaire Police Department for seventeen (17) years and his wife Brandy has worked at the Bellaire Police Department for four (4) years as a 911 operator.
Joe, his wife Brandy and their four children (AJ -18, Ryan 14, Maysen 13 and Samantha 6) will face many challenges ahead. I am asking for your help to build a strong support team for Joe and his family during their time of need.
