Jewel Mathieson Family Fund

Julia ‘Jewel’ Mathieson (09/01/1957 - 08/05/2020) was a mother, teacher, activist, and true pillar in our community. Graduating from Sonoma State University with a teaching credential, Jewel spent her life educating through creativity, interpretive dance, and her appreciation for language through her written poetry.

In 2005, Jewel Mathieson overcame her battle with breast cancer which resulted in the mastectomy of her right breast. In honor of her battle won, Jewel decided to create art out of the pain she endured by adorning her scars with a chest tattoo. Her art was a badge of honor she proudly wore as a reminder to always keep fighting.

Her passion for education thrived – and she sought to not only teach about alternative medicines but also worked the front lines to help other patients who sought legal medical cannabis. Since then, she had been an activist for the use of cannabis as a treatment for medical diseases. Her understanding and compassion for people who are sick and in need of help drove her to join forces with John Sugg to open Sonoma Patient Group in 2007, one of Sonoma County’s original medicinal cannabis resources.

In late 2019, Jewel was diagnosed with stage 4 bone, lung and liver cancer. After years of helping others at the end of their journeys, it was our turn to help her through hers. Unfortunately, the world lost a gem on August 5, 2020.

Jewel is survived by her loving husband Ken, her son Moses and her daughter Eden, who this family fund has been created for.

This fund has been created and organized by her Sonoma Patient Group team. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we were forced to cancel a public benefit that had been organized on her behalf. In lieu of this, a private celebration of life has been held to honor Jewel.

We are asking for your support to assist Jewel’s family with her medical bills incurred in the past 6 months and to help her 18-year-old daughter who is starting her adult life and education without her mother.
