The Jester Chapter 3 - Short Film

Donazione protetta
In 2016, we shot a short film called The Jester. At the time, it was just a little fun project we did to have some fun during the Halloween season. The response was overwhelming. Since its release, the first Jester short film has ballooned in popularity, warranting a second installment, both of which have a total of over 14 million views.

Now, three years later, we're ready to make the third and final installment.

We're so grateful for the love and admiration that viewers have shown our character, and feel the responsibility to send him off properly. And to do so, we feel this is a good opportunity to try expanding our resources for the first time.

MakeDo Entertainment has always been about challenges. Taking what limitations we have in crew, cast, and budget, and still trying to craft simple, high-quality stories. After six years, we feel it's time to take that step in moving up, opening ourselves up to greater opportunity.

For The Jester: Chapter 3, we sat down and looked back at our previous projects, highlighting what we've been able to accomplish with our limitations, what areas we've always had trouble filling out, and what we would need to finally accomplish goals that originally seemed out of reach. We determined that a budget of $8,000 could get us there properly.

What donations would be used for:

Camera Upgrades: For a majority of our projects, we've rented all our camera equipment. Renting equipment has been a fantastic way for us to dip our toes into using professional-grade equipment without breaking the bank. But what we save in finances, we lose in time. Rentals can only be scheduled for small amounts of time, to save on cost as well as be able to fit around everyone else's schedule. With being able to permanently upgrade equipment, it would allow us the flexibility to schedule shoots more frequently, without having to worry about return deadlines.

Lighting: We have had terrible luck with lighting in the past. From the early days of shooting with incredibly hot hardware store work lights to cheap, unreliable LED light panels, we've mostly cut our losses and shot in available light. The Jester: Chapter 2 was the first time we had rented decent lights to properly light our location. Being able to do this more often would allow us the freedom to shoot at locations that may have previously not had sufficient lighting.

Audio: An often-neglected aspect of independent, no-budget filmmaking, audio is 50% of the viewers experience. Trying to get onset audio has always been a struggle, wrestling with cables and zip-tying our equipment together. Being able to upgrade this system would prevent us from doing what we've done 80% of the time; replace all audio in post. While this can have its benefits, the biggest drawback is not getting the original natural performance from the onscreen talent, and having to call them back in later for ADR. Speaking of which...

Cast & Crew Compensation: We're so grateful to those who have sacrificed so much time to help us out over the years. All in service of creating an end result we can all be proud of. Each time, they've always deserved some sort of "thank you" from us that we've never had the funds to provide them. Your donations would let us be able to finally give back to those who have given us so much.

We plan on going into production as soon as possible, to hopefully get our film out by Halloween. Any and all support is welcome, and we thank you for taking these next steps with us.
