Well, you never think you will start a gofundme, but then you never think a 5 day Hawaiian vacation will turn into 2+ weeks either.
During our family vacation (or #OhanaVacay as I like to call it) to Hawaii my dad, Jerry Brawner, had a heart attack.
On one of the last days of our trip he was complaining about having trouble breathing. After an ambulance ride to the ER we were told he had suffered a heart attack. A procedure showed that he would need to have open heart surgery before we would be able to fly home to Kansas and that he has had a least a couple small heart attacks over the past couple months, but hadn’t realized it.
His quadruple bypass surgery on Friday, October 27th went well and he has been slowly recovering since. We had a small setback with his lungs and ended up staying in the ICU for almost a week. Today is November 2nd and we just moved out of the ICU this afternoon.
Dad is being very strong and is determined to get back home as soon as he can.
Being away from home and family & friends has been hard during this, but we are hanging in there and taking it day by day. My husband and I have both stayed in Hawaii with Dad, which means we’ve been staying in hotels and away from work for longer than we planned. Our jobs have been very accommodating and we’ve received great care here at Straub Medical Center.
A lot of people have been asking how they can help, since we’re stuck in the middle of the ocean it’s not like they run by a meal or visit us. We’ve decided to start this gofundme in response.
Anything will help, from as little as $5 to as generous as you feel. If you’re not able to help financially, sharing this page would be a great help too.
Right now we do not know how much longer Dad will remain in the hospital, how much longer we will need to stay in Hawaii, or what type of additional care will be needed once we are able to fly home. We will be using the money raised to help pay for dad’s medical bills and for our unexpected extended Hawaii vacation.
I will continue to post Facebook updates and updates through here as well. Thank you everyone for everything you’ve done so far. Your continued thoughts, prayers, and love have meant so much to all of us during these past couple weeks.
