Jeanie Needs a Wheelchair Van

Donativo protegido
Anyone familiar with my mom, Jeanie Miskell, knows that she has one of the most spectacular personalities in this world. If you’ve met her even once, it’s likely you haven’t forgotten her beautiful smile, infectious laugh, or absolutely positive view on life. If you know her or my family well, you may also be aware of the fact that she has Multiple Sclerosis (MS). She was diagnosed in 1996 at the young age of 23 and has spent the last 20 years adapting her life for this disease that has no cure.

The past 3 or so years in particular have been especially hard on my family as several hospitalizations have exacerbated her condition. While mom was quite independent for several years with the use of a standard wheelchair and the ability to complete her own transfers, those days are now behind us. She still has fairly decent arm strength, but no longer has the ability to really move her legs or her core independently. A Hoyer lift is now required to transfer mom from her bed to a chair. We were lucky this past year to receive a custom power wheelchair for her to use, but even though this is amazing around the house, it is impossible to take her out in it because she does not have a wheelchair van. Anytime mom leaves the house it requires someone (usually my dad) to physically pick her up and place her in the front seat of the car. This is obviously not an ideal method of transportation, and hinders the possibilities of mom being able to get out in the community or to visit family.

I have created this GoFundMe campaign in the hopes that some of you will be willing to help in our effort to get mom a wheelchair van. It would mean so much to me and my family to be able to get her involved in things again. I will never understand how she stays so positive and has such a wonderful view of life when she is bound to the walls of her own house the majority of the time. We have tried and been denied to get her disability assistance, so obviously finances for my family are tight. Any penny that you can spare toward this cause will help more than you know. Even a pre-owned wheelchair van can cost upwards of $30-45,000. It is my hope that this campaign can at least make it a possibility for mom to gain the transportation she deserves to resume activities we take for granted such as grocery shopping or even just going for a ride down the country backroads.

If you’ve taken the time to read this story, thank you. We understand that not everyone is able to donate toward this cause, but for those that do: thank you and we appreciate you.
