Jax and Maddy spend a late Christmas together

Let me tell you a little story about Jax and Maddy. These two are your typical siblings; they fight hard but love harder. However, that is about as typical as they are. Let me set the story.
MARCH 2019 Jax was diagnosed Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL). He battled hard through chemo, but wasn’t able to reach remission so his parents got him into a different therapy called CAR T.
DECEMBER 2019 Through CAR T cell therapy, he was able to reach remission.
FEBRUARY 2020 After a couple months of remission, the medical team felt this wasn’t going to hold for a cure, so they had Jax receive a bone marrow transplant, his MOM was able to be his donor.
MARCH 13, 2020 Most of us know this day as the day most of the United States starts worrying about COVID-19 and things begin shutting down as we entered our initial shut down/quarantine. But this was an AMAZING day for Jax because he was released from Stanford after a successful Bone Marrow Transplant!!! However, he had to stay near by in Palo Alto, far from his home in Fresno.
APRIL 2020 Jax had to be readmitted into Stanford and tests showed he had developed Graph Vs Host Disease (GVHD). He was eventually released and readmitted a couple more times because of GVHD and colds.
AUGUST 2020 Jax is released to be at HOME, not Palo Alto! He got to go to his own comfy house.
OCTOBER 1, 2020 After not wanting to eat or drink and developing all over body pain, Jax was admitted to Valley Children’s Hospital and was then transported back to Stanford, where he and his mom have been ever since. He was diagnosed with Adenovirus, which caused issues with his heart. After more testing he was diagnosed with a life-threatening transplant complication called Thrombotic Microangiopathy (TMA).
DECEMBER 2020 Jax is still at Stanford. Because of COVID restrictions, he hasn’t been able to play, hug or fight with Maddy since the end of September. BUT, Jax is doing much better! The doctors are hopeful he could be released within a week or two after Christmas, maybe in time for a New Year celebration!! However, he wouldn’t be able to go home. He’d have to stay near by in Palo Alto.
Maddy misses her brother so much. Jax and Maddy’s mom would love nothing more than having her kids together for ONE holiday this year, although they would have to celebrate Christmas late. COVID has taken a lot of freedom from us this year, but it hasn’t taken away from us what it’s taken away from Maddy, Jax and their parents. Because of COVID, the Ronald McDonald house that would be available to Jax and his parents, is not allowing siblings to visit. Because of COVID, the American Cancer Society has suspended funds for lodging and transportation, so a hotel room with at least a three week stay, would not be manageable on top of the family’s other bills.
This is where YOU come in. Your donation would go directly to a hotel stay near Stanford for this family. It will help this family be a whole unit for the first time since September. It could also possibly allow this family to ring in the new year together and definitely enjoy a late Christmas celebration! Let’s remember how good giving makes us feel. I can’t wait to see the joy on their faces as they sit around a hotel room together…. ALL TOGETHER.
