We are trying to raise money so JAMES KING can have a proper grave stone that commemorates his amazing contribution to bluegrass music.
First of all, a tremendous big thanks to all the friends, family, & bluegrass fans that helped James personally. Many of you helped by donating to the "James King Get Well" GoFundMe site we started in June of 2014. Over the two years, the "Get Well" site raised $17,207 which helped cover much of his medical & living expenses, as well as some of the funeral and estate expenses. On May 23 & 24th, James had a beautiful memorial service and funeral at Moody Funeral Service in Mt. Airy, North Carolina.
Today, James rests in the King family plot in Cana, Virginia....there is no money for a grave stone.
Bluegrass "Storyteller" James King passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2016 after succumbing to complications from a long battle with cirrhosis of the liver. James died peacefully at Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem, Va., surrounded by his longtime girlfriend, Becky Rhodes, his brothers and a few other relatives and close friends; he was preceded in death in 2012 by his daughter Shelby Ann King, who was killed in a tragic car accident at 18.
Known as the “Bluegrass Storyteller,” King won 12 Bluegrass Music Awards and earned a Grammy nomination for his 2013 album Three Chords & the Truth. He was signed to Rounder Records in 1992, after serving in the United States Marine Corps, and was inducted into the Virginia Music Hall of Fame in 2014.
King was born in Martinsville, Va., on Sept. 9, 1958, and raised in Carroll County. He grew up surrounded by bluegrass music — his father and uncle were professional bluegrass musicians — and, following his Marine Corps service, spent the 1980s playing with bluegrass bands and solo, until landing his deal with Rounder.
All money generated from this new fund will be exclusively handled by Mr. Gary Ried and dispersed to Westside Memorials of Mt. Airy, NC.
