About Jamaica Is...
Jamaica Is… was born out of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs’ Building Community Capacity Initiative (BCC), which takes a collaborative and comprehensive approach towards building and enhancing resources that support the vitality of arts and culture in Southeast Queens.
Over the last year, we’ve hosted free tours of local landmark institutions, panel discussions, workshops, and held a community-wide visioning summit to build connections around the vast diversity and strong artistic legacy of our beloved neighborhoods. We’ve also conducted extensive research to understand the assets, needs, and opportunities that need attention as we continue to develop our platform. As the start-up funding of the program comes to end, we need your help to keep all of this exciting work moving forward!
As we look to utilize all of the information we’ve compiled and take Jamaica Is… into the sustainability phase, we need funding to keep our staff, facilitate programming and offer community resources.
Our vision for Southeast Queens is a community that highlights the arts and culture and that encourages and strengthens broad participation and collaboration through engaging residents, artists, students, and cultural institutions of all kinds. We’d love your support to make this vision a reality!

With additional funds from the New York Community Trusts’ Cultural Agenda Fund, Jamaica Is… dedicated staff completed a deeper research study that serves three purposes:
(1) Help inform the Cultural Plan of New York City being rolled out in July 2017
2) Guide burgeoning capacity building efforts in the arts and culture sector in Southeast Queens as the community enters a crucial yet delicate stage of rezoning and development.
