Dear Friends,

I am writing to share with you a story of heartbreak, hope, and survival.

Six months ago, my good friend Pamela Rose’s seventeen-year-old son, Jalen, had a very bad cough that was quite concerning to his mother. After bringing him to the doctor several times due to its severity, they were instructed to get a chest x-ray as soon as possible. Expecting to hear that Jalen's asthma was the cause of this strange cough, the Doctor's at St. Michael’s Hospital delivered the unthinkable news that they found a tumour on his lungs the size of a melon. Within two weeks they were given the diagnosis that the tumour was cancerous -- Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (stage 4).

This news was unfathomable for Pamela, Jalen and their friends and family.Only a few months prior Jalen was a healthy young man playing basketball, video games, and participating in numerous high school activities. We simply could not believe that this was happening to our sweet, kind, smart, compassionate Jalen.

Immediately following the diagnosis, Jalen was removed from schooland began an aggressive chemotherapy program that was to end in May.

Unfortunately, Pamela and Jalen received more devastating news that not only had the tumour not shrunk enough but he would need radiation treatment. Due to the high-risk location of the tumour a team of physicians from at St. Michael’s Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) advised that the only hope for a positive prognosis that would ensure life for Jalen is to send him to a cancer hospital in the United States that would be able to target the heart of the cancer without it spreading or causing secondary exposure.

Since the hospital is in the southern United States Pamela will need to take time off work to care for her very sick son. Not only will she need to care for Jalen, but she will also need to pay for accommodations, daily expenses, and her bills back home in Toronto.

So why am I sharing this story with you? I am asking for your help.

Pamela and Jalen have a tough road ahead of them, which will be made much easier by your support, thoughts, and prayers.

On behalf of Pamela, Jalen, their family and friends, we are asking you to make a financial donation that will go towards the treatment and sustainability of their living expenses during this challenging time.

I know our positive thoughts and support can help Jalen beat this disease.

Thank-you so much

xx
