To permanently change the lives of one village and to break the cycle of poverty once and for all
…that is our goal at Jack Academy—a new school for boys and girls (ages PreK through 6th grade) located in the remote, Ghanaian village of Fodome Amele: a place where villagers live on $1 a day, malnourishment is rampant, and most people are so desperately poor they lack clothing.
But, how can one school change the trajectory of these children’s lives, let alone the lives of an entire village? According to numerous UN studies, the answer is to teach them how to read. In fact, the importance of literacy is so great that children born to literate mothers are 50% more likely to survive past the age of 5.
Therefore, Jack Academy’s primary focus is to teach English and reading with an added emphasis on increasing girls’ participation so to improve survival rates of future generations.
Of course, there is much work to be done. Despite the fact that English is Ghana’s national language, most rural areas (including Fodome Amele) speak only local, tribal dialects, and—like other parts of Africa—many children still cannot read after 4 years of schooling.
At Jack Academy we are 100% dedicated to providing the gift of education to the children of Fodome Amele, and we will continue our work until—through education and English literacy—our students are able play a meaningful role in the country’s economy and raise the living standards for themselves and their families.
The late Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world”.
If education is indeed the most powerful weapon for positive change in the world today (and we believe it is) then we in Jack Academy are proud to wield it, and we do so from the front lines in the war against poverty and illiteracy.
