Kindles for Refugee College Grads

Donación protegida
After returning from Dzaleka Refugee Camp, my heart is full and I am left truly inspired.

The  current students and alumni of the Jesuit Worldwide Learning Diploma Program are hands down the most passionate, hard-working, and resourceful people I have had the pleasure to know. Their desire to earn  a college education against all odds (less than 1% of refugees have a bachelor's degree) and every challenge you can't even imagine is a serious sight to behold.

Many of the alumni of the JWL program are now giving back to their communities by starting their own programs within the camp, including: primary schools, orphanages, women's empowerment groups, youth groups and sustainable agriculture projects, to name a few. I promised I would help support these programs in anyway possible and I hope you will help me keep this promise.

You have helped so much already but, there is so much yet to accomplish in improving the lives of refugees and giving hope to a very hopeless place. Please continue to give. I can assure every dollar will go straight to my refugee friends to continue their good work in Dzaleka Camp.

Jesuit Worldwide Learining (JWL) is a nonprofit organization that provides equitable high quality online college education to refugees around the world. Through this program,  refugees turned college students, can contribute their knowledge and voices to the global community of learners and together foster hope to create a more peaceful and humane world.

I originally travelled to Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi this July 2017 to support the efforts of JWL. I had been working with the site coordinator in Dzeleka Refugee Camp to learn the immediate needs of the organization and students. She said in a dream world scenario she would like to give the valedvictorians of each graduating class a Kindle and giftcard so they may have an outlet to further their learning within the camp.

My work in Dzeleka Refugee Camp was to serve two purposes:

1) Evaluate the impact the graduates of JWL's diploma program has on the community in order to justify the continued funding of these programs. I will do this evaluation by conducting interviews with the graduates of the diploma programs, the current students and community members.

2) Identify ways my employer, University of San Francisco, can better engage and improve online education to refugee communities.

Malawi, located in South East Africa, is one of the poorest countries in the world. It struggles to support its own citizens, let alone the refugees who have fled there due to civil unrest in their home countries.  Many of the refugees have lived in Dzeleka for over 15 years with very few resources or options for a better life. JWL's online college diploma programs give hope and opportunity to some of the most marginalized and vulnerable people in our world today.
