Sayville teacher fights cancer

Jenn Wittman-Cahill is a long time resident of the Bayport-Blue Point community.  She graduated from BBP High School in 1988 and teaches at Sayville High School. 

On November 6th, Jenn was diagnosed with breast cancer. Shortly thereafter, she had a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction and has spent the past 5 weeks recovering from surgery. 

Jenn has exhausted her sick time and must remain unpaid while she continues to recover.  She has no income while medical and household bills mount.  Jenn will continue her breast cancer treatment with another surgery this March.  Again she will be forced to take unpaid days.  

Jen has been a teacher and coach at Sayville High School for the past 26 years. Although she is no longer coaching, she runs two clubs at SHS: the Leadership and Key Clubs and she also stays involved athletically by scoring various athletic contests.

Jenn is an active member of St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish where she is a Eucharist minister and a member of the Columbianets. Additionally, Jenn is a competitive triathlete and hopes  to compete in Ironman Lake Placid Triathlon, after a 10 year hiatus.

We ask her family, colleagues and friends to help support Jenn during her cancer treatment, mastectomy and reconstruction surgeries and recovery.

Personal note:  I am also a breast cancer survivor.  When I was being treated and recovering I was forced to go unpaid for many weeks.  The financial burden it posed on my family was difficult.  Friends, family and colleagues generously (and without my request) came forward to help ease that burden.  My situation was very similar to Jenn's. 
This is my way of Paying It Forward. 
We help each other. 
This is the community I want to live in.
