Amanda Burchett and her three boys lost their husband and dad, JP, today - October 23, 2020. Others have lost a son, a brother, and in my case, a dear and trustworthy friend. This tragic moment brings us to our knees in sorrow and prayer.

JP needs little introduction. He was a fiercely devoted husband and father, and a deeply loyal friend. JP was a servant and treated friends like family. Many of us experienced JP's acts of kindness before we even really knew him, going far out of his way to help anyone in need. And the longer you knew him, the more you got to understand the deep well from which he served and the joy he experienced in taking care of others. This joy of caring for and serving others can have no other source than his Lord, Jesus. Though we cry out in pain and loss, we know JP is with Him, and trust his joy is now complete. JP has heard Christ's words: "Well done, good and faithful servant." and "Today you shall be with me in joy.”
No words or actions can fully approach the sacredness of JP's life, yet we can respond in service and care for the Burchetts, as JP demonstrated for us. Take a moment to consider what God might put on your heart to help the Burchetts today.
I'm part of a Christian tradition in which some prayers have been written down and shared over centuries. In times when our own words get stuck in our dry, grieving throats, or we simply don't know how to pray, we find help from those who have gone before us. If you find yourself lost for words as I am, I invite you to pray this prayer for Amanda, Benson, Brody and Baker in honor of JP:
"Heavenly Father, we entrust our loved ones - Amanda, Benson, Brody and Baker - to your care. Though sorrow darkens their lives, help them to look up to you, remembering the cloud of witnesses by which they are surrounded. And grant them the rest and peace which your presence gives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen"
