JM Fights MS with Oxygen

Donation protected
I am publicly telling my story, here and now, for the first time in 14 years.

Can you picture yourself driving into Times Square Manhattan traffic with double vision, or watching the Broadway show Phantom of the Opera with one hand over your right eye? That was me for a strange six weeks back in 2004.

Today, I could really use your help. Please help me acquire a mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber (mHBOT) to fight back the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Your contributions will also help me open the first Breathe Center in Richmond, Virginia to help people who need the natural anti-inflammatory benefits of pressurized oxygen.

There is convincing and growing evidence that people like me can benefit by increasing oxygen absorption and combating the nervous system inflammation that leads to long term disability.

More importantly to me, I am confident that my hyperbaric chamber will benefit thousands of others in central Virginia who do not currently have access to this transformational alternative therapy.

It was August 2003, at the age of 32 when I felt a strange sensation running down my spine to my heel. After several doctor appointments and an MRI, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). My body’s immune system was attacking my nervous system, leading to lesions on the brain stem and interrupted signal from brain to nerve endings in my right hand and foot.

Within the next 18 months I would experience several odd symptoms, from double vision, to right-side numbness, to difficulty walking and working for longer periods of time. My relapsing-remitting form of MS meant that symptoms would gradually subside after several weeks, but return over time with increasing permanent damage. To this day there is no known cure for MS.

A daily self-injection of interferon medication kept the most visible relapsing symptoms at bay for nearly six years. However, beginning in 2010, my symptoms became more challenging, with increasing difficulty maintaining balance, walking, and overcoming heavy fatigue doing the simplest activities such as showering, climbing stairs, cooking, or mowing the lawn.

My ability to invest in my own care and therapy became compromised beginning in 2004 when I needed to take a period of short-term disability from work in the financial industry. In 2013 while working in a bank, after several years of accommodation to work around my unusual early day fatigue, I was released after management determined I was not meeting expectations.

Since 2014, various occupations including marketing financial services and several entrepreneurial ventures have not provided the income necessary to save for alternative therapy or purchase equipment to start an HBO therapy business.

Blessed with my wonderful, supportive and hard-working wife, Charlene, we have been fortunate to keep our insurance and pay our regular bills, albeit with many fewer extras that we used to take for granted.

Despite all this, I live life optimistically and positively. I volunteer time promoting model railroading, we enjoy road trips, I provide social media content for several organizations, and I frequently take a friend also living with MS from her group home to church.

If we had not already cut our expenses to a minimum and maximized our efforts to save, I could not conscientiously use a service such as GoFundMe to ask for help. But circumstances have changed, and I have been challenged to set my ego aside, take my eyes off myself and look at the big picture.

One year ago, I was introduced to the concept of hyperbaric oxygen therapy and its potential benefit for people with neurological conditions like MS. I believe God gave me skills and ambition to craft a business plan and build a website to launch a Virginia business that would greatly expand the affordable access to HBO therapy. You can read about my business at www.breatherva.com.

Currently, I face two significant challenges to taking the next step. First, I am looking for physicians, chiropractors, naturopaths and nurse practitioners who will partner with me to provide prescriptions to eligible clients who could benefit from HBO therapy as an enhancement to traditional care.

Second, I am looking for funding to purchase wholesale, a patented 60” vertical mild hyperbaric chamber to begin my personal daily HBO therapy. Additional funds received and subsequently raised will be used to place the chamber in an accessible office location where clients will also have access to therapy. The cost of 1 chamber delivered at wholesale price is $12,981.25.

My long term goal is to found a non-profit organization called Breathe Hope to educate and provide affordable access to mHBO therapy, to turn my physical setback, my financial liability, into a breath of air for so many others.

In fact, the first 100 friends who contribute $100 to this cause, I will recognize as the Founders 100. I will thank you with a plaque listing your name in the lobby of Breathe Hope and I will ultimately donate this first chamber to use in the charitable mission.

Your prayers, thoughts, ideas, and networking referrals are most greatly appreciated at this time. While we can’t choose the obstacles that greet our journey through life, we can choose how to respond and overcome. I am convinced that your contribution and assistance will help me physically and pave the way for me to make a difference by helping many others. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The incredible video above inspired me to think big about Hyperbarics and discover people who need help.
