Scholarship for EOPS Students at FCC

Donation protected
Hello everyone,

I'm raising funds to establish a scholarship for EOPS students at Fresno City College. This scholarship is in memory of my brother Ivan who passed away in a car accident on November 12, 2015 at 25 years old.

That year, Ivan obtained his GED from Cesar Chavez Fresno Adult School and his commitment to education lead him to enroll as a student at Fresno City College. He was excited to start his first semester at Fresno City College and he was one step closer to reaching his goal which was to help others who had gone through similar life experiences as him.

Ivan was born with a congenital heart defect known as Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome (HRHS) and since a child he had to overcome many adversaries in life.  His physical limitations however didn't prevent him from helping others. He was actively involved in the community by volunteering his time at a local church and WestCare.  Something I will always admire from him is his resilience and determination to overcome life challenges and never give up.

On November 4, 2018, I ran the Two Cities Marathon (26.2 miles) for the third consecutive time in memory of my brother. To honor him this year I decided to raise funds to help at-risk students who are part of the Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS) at Fresno City College.

My goal is to raise $5,000 to establish a scholarship under my brother’s name at Fresno City College. While funds are still available, the State Center Community College Foundation, through the Foundation Board Matching Fund Program, will match 100% of contributions of $5,000 or more toward establishing an endowed scholarship. (An endowed scholarship is a permanent gift that ensure the scholarship will provide for students forever).

You can make a donation through this GoFundMe page or through the State Center College Community Foundation webpage:

https://www.scccd.edu/foundation/index.html

When you arrive at the webpage, you will see a drop-down menu for designation. Please select “other” at the bottom of the list. A new box will appear that reads “other designation (optional)”; in this box, please enter Ivan Maqueda Gutierrez Scholarship and proceed with completing the form. Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation and an email regarding your donation.

Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS)
The EOPS Program is a state-funded retention and support program designed to assist students who are affected by social, economic, educational, or language disadvantages. The program helps eligible students meet their educational objectives, whether they seek occupational certificates, associate degrees, or transfer to four-year institutions.

Under the EOPS Program at Fresno City College they also have the Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) Program that helps students who are single parents and Next-UP Program that helps supports higher education success and the wellbeing of current and former foster youth students.
