It’s a long way to Galway

Everyone who knows Mary Harney knows that she has dedicated many of the past 45 years as an advocate for:
     …rights of LGBT people,
     …those with HIV/AIDS,
     …workers’ rights, and
     …anti-bullying.

Mary spent the first 16 years of her life institutionalized, first in one of Ireland’s infamous mother and baby “homes” and later in an industrial school. These life experiences have been catalysts for her lifelong advocacy for human rights.

She is currently a key member of Ireland’s Collaborative Forum, set up by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs to recommend possible solutions towards obtaining transitional justice for abuses perpetrated against mothers and children who were institutionalized in Ireland’s mother and baby units. Mary is the only US member on the Forum, representing the Irish diaspora.

At 70 years of age, she is still fiercely committed to justice for her fellow humans, a commitment that is now carrying her to the University of Ireland at Galway (NUIG), where she has been accepted into the advanced degree program for international law and human rights. Further education in law will enable Mary to become a more effective advocate for human rights, both in Ireland and the US.

She plans to depart for her year’s study in Ireland in late August.

There’s one small problem.

She needs your help to get there. University fees, plus living costs in Ireland and transportation add up to $35,000. In spite of working and saving, and although she won a $10,000 scholarship from the Irish government, she’s short (well, we know she’s short—4’10”). But we’re talking about short of the funds she needs to make this dream come true.

Mary needs $7,500. That’s what it’s going to take to make her mortgage payments here in Maine so that she can keep her home, while renting a place in Galway and covering living expenses, especially health insurance, there for a year.

We’re asking you to help, if you can. Help if you know Mary and support her efforts to achieve justice for others. Please consider making a donation now and share this with friends of yours who might also be able to donate. We’ll give you frequent updates on our progress. Thank you.
