Hello, my name is Annie and I’m a volunteer for The North West Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (NWSPCA). We are a small voluntary run organization who work tirelessly in Co Mayo - rescuing, vaccinating, re-homing and neutering domesticated animals. We also help with horses, goats, donkeys and other animals, and like to think that no creature in distress is ever overlooked by us.
Towards the end of September 2017 we were tipped off about an abuse case. We were told a dog was being kept in the boot of a broken car!
When we arrived and opened the boot we were met with a terrified dog. She was emaciated, infested with lice and very frightened. Initially she hobbled off and hid, but we eventually got her. She’s about 4 to 5 years old, and has severely deformed front legs.
We got her treated for her infestation and minded her; gaining her trust. Now she has a name - Issey, a warm bed and some of the horror of her incarceration is behind her. She’s put on weight and sleeps a lot. I brought Issey to the lovely Moy Vets in Ballina for a full check-up two weeks ago. She had her legs x-rayed and it turns out she has bilateral pancarpal.
She has been referred to Ark Vets orthopedic surgeon James Dunne in Galway for specialist surgical treatment on each leg. This will improve the quality of her life and make her more comfortable. Issey will be going on 18th October for her treatment.
We’re looking at three months of treatment, with two arthrodesis operations and x-rays, joint taps, medication, follow up appointments etc. As a small financially struggling charity we are cash strapped and therefore I’m hoping fellow animal lovers will help us. We don’t know anything about Issey’s first five years - a dog with no name in the boot of a car - but we do know she’s been in pain and has suffered.
We want the second half of her life to have comfort, love and peace.
Whatever you can donate to help us pay for her treatment is hugely appreciated.
