Send Isaiah to Diabetes Summer Camp

Donation protected

I'm posting this campaign for my son, Isaiah, who was recently diagnosed with Type I Diabetes.  He has composed his own letter to make his appeal for this campaign in his own words (edited lightly be yours truly). It reads as follows:

Hello. My name is Isaiah Peoples. I am 11 years old and I live in Fort Worth, Texas. I was born in Michigan though and lived there for 9 years. Things have changed a lot since then.

This past November (2014) I was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes. I had a difficult stay in the hospital followed by an adjustment period that I am still going through. I do not like to use so many needles and shots every day but I know it is something I’m going to have to get used to.  I also need to get used to counting carbohydrates and units of insulin for meals and bedtime.

A friend of the family told us I could get help from Camp Sweeney. Camp Sweeney is a special camp for kids with Type 1 Diabetes that lasts for three weeks during the summer. They help kids like me learn how to manage their diabetes and begin to make a habit managing it properly. I will also be able to meet and interact with other Type 1 diabetic kids who have gone through the same things I have, who understand what I’m going through, and maybe even make some new friends.

Camp Sweeney will also help me be more confident about my future with diabetes. I can learn the skills I need to live with the disease and maybe I could even teach other people to manage it properly. I will also learn to plan healthy meals so I won’t need so many shots. The camp will help me get away from the environment of cheesecake, cupcakes, McDonalds, Chili’s, Chucky E. Cheese pizza (which tastes like cardboard anyway) and all those unhealthy fast foods, and switch to an environment with healthy, fresh, and organic foods.

Now in order to go there I will need to raise money. I am attempting to raise $4,000 for one summer visit of three weeks.  This money will cover the entire tuition for the camp including lodging, meals, transportation, instruction and activities.  To learn more about Camp Sweeney you can visit their website at http://www.campsweeney.org/

Please help me with whatever amount you are able to contribute so that I can learn more about the disease and how to live a healthy, happy life in spite of it.  No donation is too small.  If you are unable to donate, please share this page with your friends and family.

Thank You
