hi y’all. my name is iris delany. i’m a 21 transgender woman, photographer, and artist based in brooklyn, new york. i wanted to start off this statement with complete transparency. the extremely strict, religious, emotionally + physically abusive environments i grew up convinced me all up until now that i wasn’t worthy of living in my authenticity. when i first came out as transgender to my family, friends, and community my identity was not only dismissed but used it against me. people at school would forcefully put me in women’s restrooms, send me anonymous messages (in person and online) telling me to kill myself, vandalize my property / car / belongings and would call me a new slur every single day. at the age of 15 i was admitted into a mental health rehabilitation center for trying to kill myself. i wasn’t able to complete my treatment due to financial and religious reasons. the majority of my aftercare treatment was through the church that told me that my mental health is a direct link to my queer identity. offering me guidance through repenting for my sins and apologizing to god. conversation therapy. throughout that experience i decided to graduate high school a year early and move out of my hometown for the sake of my sanity and well-being. i attended college for 3 years and haven’t been able to go back due to the excess of student loans i’ve taken out and the lack of financial support. as of right now i’m working a full time job as a photography assistant. one of my the highest accomplishments i want to achieve in this lifetime is to break the traumatic generational cycle. i strive to to the best, most authentic version of myself to represent to others that queer people are capable of living their dreams while simultaneously not having to sacrifice who they are or what they feel. i’m asking for funding to help me begin and continue hormone replacement therapy, gender affirming care (laser hair removal and top / bottom surgery) paying off medical bills (doctors visits, therapy, etc.) and resources for housing + groceries.
