Flash Flood Recovery 4 Irene&Martin

Donation protected
Summary: Thank you for supporting Irene and Martin's recovery from Tropical Storm Lidia. Their family has been through tropical storms and hurricanes in Cabo before but they've never suffered like this -- not even close. They are in good health but the damage to their home and business of 35 years is beyond belief. We are grateful they survived, and also deeply saddened by their loss, trauma, and grief.

While the damages amount to much more than $15,000 USD -- and they don't have insurance -- any amount of support helps and is much appreciated.

Irene and Martin's story:

It had been raining for a couple of days but Irene and Martin felt reassured after hearing that the storm would not turn into a hurricane. And then, late at night on August 31st, they awoke to a large noise and a huge wall of water. A flash flood, something they'd never experienced before, came crashing through their neighborhood, taking out trees, vehicles, and homes -- including their own.

The flash flood forced its way into their home and business, the caba~nitas (cabins) they'd built and rented out over the years. Thankfully, they were upstairs with their two small dogs, Luna and Luis, when it happened. Though already dark out, they saw and heard the water smash through the downstairs doors and windows.  In shock but hoping the worst had passed, they remained upstairs, that is until they heard the terrifying sounds of their home as it began to split, crack and crumble.

Irene and Martin crawled out the window, and down the slanted roof holding their dogs close. They rushed to the corner of their property and up the stairs to the only remaining caba~na that seemed safe enough to seek shelter. And they were right -- everything else had been destroyed or washed away.

The foundation of the house was unearthed, the floor and tile ripped out, staircases left hanging, and a brown layer of mud and dirt up to three meters high was left on any remaining walls. Very few possessions were recovered. The most painful material loss being photos and other sentimental items.

Honest, hard workers their entire lives, Irene and Martin were hoping to retire soon. They'd planned to one day live off of the sale of their business and property. The house and caba~nitas are beyond repair and would have to be completely rebuilt, something they can't afford and don't intend to try. So they're preparing to sell for a price way under what they had expected.

To add insult to injury, they can't sell their property until they demolish all of the buildings. This will cost them $15,000-$20,000 USD. They will receive no support from the Mexican government to do this. They did not have insurance.
