The Furaha Project : Since 1996, the poverty rate in
Uganda has dropped by over 20 percent thanks to support from people like you! But there is much work left to be done, with 24.5 percent of the
population still living below the poverty line, and over 1.2 million children
orphaned by AIDS.
With statistics like these weighing heavily on my heart, me and 4 other young ladies are heading to Uganda this November to volunteer our time and talents. We're a close-knit group of five young women who were fortunate to be raised in Ottawa, and we're eager to give back by helping people in less privileged parts of the world.
We will be working with three small charities: the Furaha Child Sponsorship Program, which supports over 300 children in Uganda, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo; the Tumaini AIDS Prevention Program, which helps women affected by HIV and AIDS through income-generating projects for self-sufficiency; as well as the Jajja Njagala program which encourages support to the elderly.
As we prepare to embark on our journey, we hope you will consider a donation to help reach our goal of $20,000, a sum that will provide funds for the local growth and help cover costs associated with charitable work (supplies, travel to remote areas, etc.). Your financial support is a gift to the future of East Africa; a gift that will help poverty rates decline further, children live better, and women with HIV and AIDS thrive.
