Hello, My name is Dylan Baca and I am the founder and President of the Indigenous Peoples’ Initiative (IPI), we are currently advocating and working to make Indigenous Peoples Day a holiday nationally, through advocacy and by working to pass our bill. The IPI believes that through education, advocacy, and lobbying, marginalized communities can be seen with more visibility and respect. We strive to promote positive narratives of disparaged people and communities by working to remove stereotypes and stigmatism associated with different races and ethnicities.
Through accurate representation we believe that we can positively impact policies and work to end continued discrimination and disparities faced by Native communities. Two years ago Senator Jamescita Peshlakai of Arizona gave me the platform and the opportunity to create the IPI. I created the organization to be a tribute to my great-grandmother. My great-grandmother and I were extremely close. Ever since I was little she would babysit me and when she became older and couldn't take care of herself as much I became the babysitter at times. Through our connection I learned a lot about kindness and compassion for others. As I lead the Indigenous Peoples’ Initiative, I work to shadow many attributes of her kind and caring personality.
Currently we live in a time of immense social change that we have not seen in contemporary history. My organization sees this as an opportunity to not only work to promote positive narratives concerning Native Americans but also work to pass Indigenous Peoples’ Day, not only in the state of Arizona but across the nation. Celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day gives us the opportunity to tell a more accurate narrative of Native Americans.
The history of American Indians in our country is a history we must recognize as we seek to build a future side by side with cooperation and mutual respect for one another. A clear-view of history can be uncomfortable and will shake us from familiar narratives, but it is precisely because of this discomfort that we learn and grow and harness our collective power to make this nation one that truly aligns with democratic principles.
If you donate to our initiative, your money will go towards our organization establishing a 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), building a website, and work with a media consultant. If phase I goes well, we plan on working to raise funds to lobby on behalf of our bill on a national level.
