India "Half the Sky" Service Projects

This Summer, our group of twenty adventurous and enthusiastic University of Washington students will embark on a three week journey through India to learn about the role of women in leadership and entrepreneurship. During our trip, we will work on three service projects to gain a deeper understanding of the work and lives of the people of India, and help change the lives of those less fortunate.
With your help, we will raise enough money to complete these three projects:
1. Rainwater Harvesting: Biome Trust is an organization that builds rainwater well in rural areas to provide villagers with clean drinking water. The groundwater in most of India has dangerously high levels of lead and fluoride, but through education and the installation of rainwater harvesting tanks in areas of high toxicity in their water, people in these rural areas will live healthier lives.
2. Thread Store: The Self-Employed Women's Association
SEWA) is a large collective that offers its many members myriad opportunities in training, advocacy, and community building. The women who work as handicrafters do not have a low cost thread supply. SEWA is working to address that with the opening of their own thread store, in hopes that these women can increase their livelihoods and afford a little more food for their families every day.
3. Education Center: An offshoot of the successful micro-finance institution Grameen Koota (GK), the GK Hippocampus Learning Centers offer rural children affordable, quality education. They also provide teacher education and leadership opportunities for local women. We wish to assist in building a preschool for the children of mothers receiving small microfinance loans to support their tiny businesses.
Our goal is to raise at least $4,000 by August 15th to fund these projects. Your donation in any amount is welcome and sincerely appreciated. Thank you for helping us change lives.
