Education Equity for Blind Persons

Donation protected
7 million people in the US are blind.  74% of blind people are undereducated.  Subsequently, blind people are underemployed. This is an education system problem.

Something needs to be done!  Classrooms and class materials must be accessible in braille or through assistive technology for blind people.  Despite the best efforts of parents and advocates this does not happen.

Our family has the opportunity to take Ian's Case to the 8th Circuit - United States Court of Appeals and have the Department of Justice weigh-in on the case.  This means that we could have a ruling on educational standards that would matter for all individuals with disabilities.  IDEA & ADA must be upheld for Blind individuals.

Ian's Story
Ian is blind.  He was adopted from China at the age of 5 and has no cognitive impairment.  In fact, Ian is 17 years old and an honors student.  Ian reads Braille,  and uses Braille technology for classroom work and a cane for safety when walking.

Ian cannot receive education in his community school because they lack the appropriate level of services to accomodate his blindness.  Instead, Ian receives education from the state blind school and does not live with his family.  Ian  is institutionalized as a residential student 5 days / week.  Why, because our local education system failed.

The law for blind people with disabilities is clear - but the courts continue to be biased in favor of school districts.  Blind people continue to be undereducated at a rate of 74% compared to people with vision.

We need to change the law for blind people and education.  We need school districts to educate blind people using braille, braille assistive technology and all the other skills important to live, work and attain education / employment as an adult.

We need your help.  Our family has sued the school district and we have appealed that decision.  Again the courts have sided with the school district - deciding that despite overwelming written evidence of the schools failure (estimated by them to be at least 25% failure)... the judge determined that our son did recieve some level of educational benefit and therefore the school district did everything it could.   NOT TRUE!

Please support Ian's Case.  Help him and other blind people to live the educated life that they want!

Funds will be used to support the legal bills required for an appeal in the 8th Circuit United States Court of Appeals.  Blind individuals have the right to live the lives they want.  The education system should not be stacked against them.

We thank you in advance for your support.
