IU Audiology Red Bird Mission Trip

In a beautiful, yet isolated part of the US, Clay, Bell, and Leslie counties in Appalachia are some of the poorest of our country where between 30-40% of families live below the poverty line.
Due to these economic conditions and the cost of technology, accessibilty to hearing healthcare is upsettingly low. Ironically, there appears to be a higher occurence of hearing loss in this area, possibly due to the the excessive noise exposure of local coal power stations.
In 1921, The Red Bird Mission & Clinic began operating to provide support for the families of the area in education, healthcare, job training, faith, and other areas of community assistance. In 2008, Sonova joined forces with the Mission to begin providing hearing healthcare to those in need.
Each year, Indiana University sends its second-year audiology doctoral students to Beverly, Kentucky as volunteers to assist these efforts by providing hearing care services and fitting hearing aids to individuals who otherwise may never have had the opportunity to receive them. It's an incredibly gratifying and humbling experience that we, the class of 2020, are excited to embark on! We strive each year to fundraise for the event, to be able to hand in a donation that allows the foundation to provide more hearing aids and affect more lives. We have lofty goals for this fundraiser to be sure, but with the help of family and friends, we are optimistic about our ability to support our cause, pay it forward, and positively impact the lives of our neighbors .
The ability to hear is a gift we should never take for granted. It's how we share our thoughts, feelings, and needs, and it's how we learn. Please help the IU AuD class of 2020 achieve its fundraising goals for this year and allow us to provide more hearing aids and change the lives of more children and adults with hearing loss! Anything helps, big or small .
