¿Quiénes somos?

Somos una organización sin ánimo de lucro registrada en España. Desde 2015, trabajamos para ofrecer una educación igualitaria y de calidad para más de una centena de menores en situación de vulnerabilidad en Beirut, el Líbano.

¿Cómo empezamos?

26 Letters nació del amor incondicional entre dos extraños: Janira, una estudiante de intercambio española de 19 años estudiando en Beirut, y Salah, un niño sirio de 13 años que huyendo de la guerra en su país había terminado vendiendo rosas en las misma calle donde Janira estudiaba. Juntos hicieron de Beirut su nuevo hogar, un hogar al que llamarían 26 Letters.

¿A quién ayudamos?

En 26 Letters damos la bienvenida a todo tipo de personas. Todo menor independientemente de su contexto, nacionalidad y condición física, mental o social puede acceder a nuestros programas. Por el momento ayudamos a 134 estudiantes, de 3 a 18 años, y a sus familias (un total de 301 beneficiarios). Debido a que el Líbano es el país receptor de más refugiados per cápita del mundo (con un total de 1,5 millones de refugiados sirios en el país), la mayoría son refugiados sirios. Les ayudamos ofreciendo servicios multidisciplinares que incluyen: apoyo educativo y vocacional, apoyo emocional y psicosocial, apoyo sanitario y psicológico, apoyo social y económico y oportunidades laborales.

¿Por qué necesitamos tu ayuda?

2020 ha llegado cargado de desafíos para el Líbano. La potente revolución social al inicio del año paralizó el país por completo. Las revueltas, junto al aumento despiadado de medidas restrictivas contra la comunidad siria, impidieron que nuestros estudiantes vinieran al centro. Respondimos rápidamente creando un programa educativo de enseñanza a domicilio. Entonces llegó la COVID-19. No solo nos vimos obligados a suspender el nuevo programa, sino que además la gran mayoría de nuestros voluntarios tuvieron que volver a sus países. 

Actualmente, el Líbano hace frente a una de las peores crisis económicas del ultimo siglo. El colapso de la moneda y la crítica inflación han provocado que productos básicos como la comida y las medicinas sean inaccesibles. Para ayudar a nuestras familias, hemos tenido que comprometer nuestro centro educativo para así destinar todos nuestros recursos a su supervivencia.

Ahora necesitamos tu ayuda para que no solo sobrevivan, sino que vuelvan a vivir como merecen: con comida, medicinas y un centro educativo que consiga romper el ciclo de pobreza que prevalece en su comunidad.

What is 26 Letters?

We are a Spanish non-profit organisation. We have been working for the past 5 years to provide equal and high-quality education for over a hundred vulnerable children and teens living in Beirut, Lebanon.

How Did the Project Begin?

26 Letters was born of unconditional love between two strangers: Janira and Salah. Janira was a Spanish 19-year-old student conducting an academic exchange in Beirut. Salah was a Syrian 13-year-old boy that fled from the war and ended up selling roses on the very street where Janira studied. Together they made Beirut their new home, a home they would call 26 Letters.

Who do we help?

At 26 Letters we welcome everyone. Every student who knocks on our door is welcomed to join our program regardless of their context, nationality, physical, mental or social condition. However, as Lebanon has the highest number of refugees per capita in the world (with over 1,5 million) most of our students are Syrian refugees. We help them through comprehensive services that include: vocational and educational support, psychological and health support, emotional and psychosocial support, social and financial support and work opportunities.

Why do we need your help?

2020 has brought many new challenges with it. Lebanon welcomed the new year with the spread of a powerful revolution that literally paralyzed the whole country. The riots, joined with the incensement of repressive policies against the Syrian community, forbid our children from coming to school. We quickly adapted to home schooling so our students could continue their education in a safely manner. Then, came COVID-19 that no only made it impossible for our volunteers to teach students at home, but that forced them to go back to their home countries. 

Now, the country faces one of the worst economic crisis in decades. With the country’s currency total collapse and the hyperinflation, basic products such as food and medicines have become unattainable for many. To help our families, we have had to compromise our educational centre so that we could focus all strengths and resources in ensuring their survival.

Now, we need your support to help them not only survive, but thrive. They deserve to have access not only to the food and medicines that ensure their survival, but also to an education that succeeds in breaking the cycle of poverty that afflicts their community.
