Some of you have met my mom, Antonia Irizarry aka "Toni" or "Toñita", whether it was sharing a few drinks, eating her delicious meals or even partaking a 5K with her. If not, then I'm pretty sure you've heard me speak highly of her and told stories of how she has more of a social life than I do. My mom may only be only 4'11 but she has a spunky attitude and a heart of gold. She is the most sincerest, caring, and loving person I know.
As a family, we have gone through years of hurricane seasons but unfortunately Hurricane Maria is the one that has affected us the hardest. The place she grew up in and has called her home for the last 15 years in Ponce, PR has been destroyed. A few things may have been salvageable but majority of her belongings were ruined. The roof is completely gone and the interior has water damage and is starting to mold. Thankfully, she is staying at her best friend's house who did not suffer any damages.
Right now, she has no place to call home. She repeatedly said to me "Emily, it's all material things that can be replaced... most important thing is I'm alive and OK". I completely understand and agree with her but... the thought of a 60-year-old woman having to start all over from the ground up is devastating and breaks my heart.
Many have asked what can they do to help her... I honestly don't even know where to start. She has a long and tough journey ahead and will need support regardless. I figured this page could be a starting point to help rebuild her life.

Algunos de ustedes han conocido a mi mamá, Antonia Irizarry aka "Toni" o "Toñita", ya sea compartiendo unos tragos, comiendo sus deliciosas comidas o incluso participando de un 5 k con ella. Si no, entonces estoy bastante seguro de que me has oído hablar muy bien de ella y contó historias de cómo ella tiene más de una vida social que yo. Mi mamá sólo puede ser 4 ' 11 pero tiene una actitud valiente y un corazón de oro. Ella es la persona más sincera, cariñosa y amorosa que conozco.
Como familia, hemos pasado por años de temporadas de huracanes pero lamentablemente el huracán María es el que más nos ha afectado. El lugar donde ella creció y la ha llamado a su casa durante los últimos 15 años en Ponce, PR ha sido destruida. Algunas cosas pudieron haber sido salvar pero la mayoría de sus pertenencias fueron arruinadas. Ella me dijo repetidamente "Emily, es todo lo material que puede ser sustituido ... lo más importante es que estoy vivo y bien". Entiendo completamente y estoy de acuerdo con ella pero .... el pensamiento de una mujer de 60 años que tiene que empezar todo desde el principio es devastador y me rompe el corazón.
Muchos han preguntado qué pueden hacer para ayudarla ... Honestamente ni siquiera sé por dónde empezar. Ella tiene un largo y duro viaje por delante y necesitará apoyo sin importar. Pensé que esta página podría ser un punto de partida para ayudar a reconstruir su vida.
