Honduras Eta Hurricane Relief for Garifuna Comm.

Donation protected
Last week Hurricane Eta swept through Central America, and Honduras was the most affected country in its path. The country was left in a compounded crisis while already battling the COVID-19 pandemic, soaring poverty rates and gross levels of political corruption.

We are fundraising to purchase food, water, and medicine to assist those affected in the San Pedro Sula area. If you are not able to contribute yourself, please share and help us get the word out. Your support is needed and appreciated, and every bit helps.

Bridges have fallen throughout the country, roads have been destroyed. Severe flooding has devastated Valle de Sula (Sula Valley), the country’s second-largest metropolitan area. Hundreds of families have been made homeless, many of them indigenous and Afro Honduran (Garifuna).

The Honduran government has forsaken its people after neglecting to warn them of the severity of the hurricane. As it usually happens, the most affected are those who are the most vulnerable. Several fundraising initiatives have begun, but few are supporting Garifuna communities, which include Masca, Travesía, Bajamar, Bajamar, Rio Tinto, and Santa Rosa de Aguan.

Entire families are now staying in temporary shelters where food, clothing, and medicine are urgently needed. Our government has sadly forsaken them, so their only hope is the kindness of those who can lend a helping hand.

On an unprecedented scale, the Honduran population has taken matters into their own hands in an outpour of solidarity, providing shelter, clothing, food, and lending small boats and vessels to rescue families stranded on their roofs. Please help us continue helping themselves and one another. A monetary donation will arrive far faster than any collection of food or goods because airports and the shipping port are so flooded that they cannot be used.

I'm teaming up with a young team of Garifuna leaders in San Pedro Sula who will be transparently receiving the raising funds solely for Ofraneh, the Black Fraternal Organization of Honduras in San Pedro Sula, which is now functioning as a shelter.

Your contribution would help purchase non-perishable food, clothing, blankets, baby supplies, personal hygiene, cleaning supplies, medicine, bottled water, and essential goods to assist in post-disaster relief efforts. Thank you and please share widely.
