Hurricane Relief for Puerto Rico
Hello, my name is Armando Aviles. I am a Deputy with the Harris County Sheriffs Office. When I heard of the devastation Hurricane Maria cause on Puerto Rico it tore my heart apart. I was recently dealing with the floods caused by Hurricane Harvey here in Houston. As I was watching the news on my living room with my wife and kids I began to cry. Thinking of all the children, elderly and families that were affected.
It personally hit me because I am Puerto Rican. My family, heritage, and roots were affected. I was talking with my brother who lives in Las, Vegas and he tells me, "I just spoke with Eric our cousin" "Our family only has one weeks supply of food left and no water or electricity." I broke down and cried.
I along with many people all around the world have been affected and very emotional. I used this emotion to drive me to create a Hurricane Relief Drive for Puerto Rico and a group called United For Puerto Rico.
I partnered with a local Krogers Manager who is Puerto Rican and explained what I wanted to do. She broke down and started crying and allowed us to use her space. With less than a week of planning I organized a two day Hurricane Relief Drive for Puerto Rico.
I asked local business owners, organizations, community leaders, law enforcement and citizens for help and they all wanted to help.
I contacted my friend Deputy Dhaliwhal who is an executive of a non-profit organization called United Sikhs. I explained what I wanted to do and without hesitation, he said his organization will ship out all of our donations directly to the people of Puerto Rico.
On October 7th and 8th we held our first Hurricane Relief Drive for Puerto Rico and it was successful. We were able to raise $1,600 and fill up an 18 wheeler full of donations. There will be more Relief drives to come.
I am asking for everyone's help so we can purchase and help our brothers, sisters and children of Puerto Rico.
I will use the money to purchase the needed items.
