Hot Yoga For You!

Donation protected
Approximately 5 years ago, I attended my very first Bikram hot yoga class. I did not really know what to expect. I went into the room and was immediately surprised by the gush of heat that hit my face...born in the summer months this was not a problem for me. I started class very clumsily with the breathing exercise. For some reason I could not get the synchronization of my head and my arms! However, by the end of class, I fell in love. It was the first time that I had achieved a sweat like that! I knew that I would be doing Bikram Yoga for the rest of my life. As I continued to practice, I realized just how many benefits I was receiving. I was much more calm in my daily life...I started to smile a lot more and I achieved a toned body. I was a personal trainer before so I have always been in pretty good shape and I was also a runner. However, many of my physical activities were actually causing much more harm to me than good - in essence I was banging up my joints.

I ended up having knee surgery in February of 2010 after weeks of an aggravated injury which left my knees hot and swollen. The surgery took me away from Bikram Yoga temporarily but my body yearned for it so much that I called my husband up one day and simply said: "I am going to yoga." That first class back was hard for me. I could not do many of the postures because of my knees. However, it did not deter me. A year later, after making significant gains in healing through regular practice I decided to head to teacher training in Los Angeles. I was so excited to go even though it meant leaving my family for 9 weeks. But I did it and at the end, I have fallen in love again. Teaching yoga is my passion. I see it as giving the gift of life..paying it forward because I was given this gift as well. My knees are still a work in progress but no more swelling!

I am over a year into teaching Bikram Yoga in the Maryland/DC area and want to spread the mission of healing through the art of yoga. Bikram Yoga gave me control again over my body and I have advanced so much in my practice over the last few years. As Bikram says, no one is ever too old, to sick, too fat, too skinny, too late to enjoy the enormous health benefits from regular practice of Bikram Yoga. I want to dedicate the rest of my life to it through the opening of my own studio in Riverdale, Maryland. located near the Arts District in Hyattsville. It is perfect for a Bikram Yoga Studio and will serve residents in the area who are seeking to heal their bodies.

Will you help me achieve my goal? I am aiming to raise through this website $150,000 to complement other funding sources. Funds will be raised to pay for some initial capital investments to provide a state-of-the-art studio. The goal is to open doors in January 2013. Those who give will qualify for deep discounts upon opening of the studio up to and including a life time membership of yoga! No donation is too small! Your support is needed today.
