So I did not want to openly post this on any major social networks because only our closest friends and family know and it isn't something we wanted brought up constantly, but....we are running into many setbacks and any help is appreciated.
About 4 or 5 weeks ago my mom was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer. A couple weeks after diagnosis we found out; after another biopsy; that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes.
Here are the problems we're running into. My mom like most was forced to get an insurance policy this year. The policy was great-until she found out she had cancer and most specialty clinics do not take her insurance. She was being seen by the doctor who was treating her recently deceased fiance for his prostate cancer and come to find out-this doctor is also not in the network for her insurance. Finally, just yesterday (July 10th) she found a doctor in Georgetown to take her insurance. However, in the mean time she has been racking up out of network costs and the only income she is receiving is a pension of $750 a month. After she pays her mortgage and electric bill she is out of money. I help the best I can of course, but it won't be enough. Also, because of this pension she receives, she doesn't qualify for medicaid, food stamps, etc. Basically, she doesn't qualify for any assistance because she has medical insurance (that she can't afford to pay and if she doesn't pay she will be penalized by the government) and she has an income.
Contingent to her cancer diagnosis she can get disability-however, we have had to wait and wait for this because she needed to have her petscan first (this shows if the cancer has spread to her brain or any other organs) once she gets this she will be able to receive her treatment plan (chemo and radiation) and have it submitted to disability. Problem was, we just now found a network provider for this as well, in Dallas.
So next week is a big week for us, my mother especially. She gets her petscan on Monday and on Wednesday she meets with her new doctor to discuss all her biopsies and her scan, then hopefully treatment can begin. I will be taking her to all of the appointments that I can, as her car isn't very reliable right now. Hopefully her new doctor is a good one!
