Feed Sun Valley With Walk-In Fridge

Donation protected
For the past five years the Sun Valley Kitchen + Community Center has served the Sun Valley community through cooking and music classes for kids, free meals for youth every weeknight, a food pantry provided free of charge to the community twice weekly, community events, and more.

After years of growth, the Kitchen is ready to expand its services to open a restaurant that will provide additional food access for the community. With a central location in the Sun Valley neighborhood, Sun Valley Kitchen is striving to increase its community service by offering a neighborhood restaurant where residents can enjoy fresh cooked meals, as well as provide the residents opportunities to pursue careers in the food business. In a concerted effort to increase the upward mobility of residents, the restaurant at Sun Valley Kitchen will be a learning opportunity for interested residents to gain experience and improve their skills. Utilizing a social enterprise model, we want the restaurant to become a stepping-stone to greater independence and success for Sun Valley residents.

In order to open Sun Valley Kitchen’s restaurant, there is a critical need for a walk-in refrigerator / freezer. The installation and purchase of the walk-in is between $20,000 - $25,000, and we are seeking donations to cover this one-time expense. The walk-in fridge is essential to operate the restaurant, in addition to all of the existing programs in support of this impoverished community, including free meals for youth, the food pantry for residents, cooking classes, a community garden, and more.

Your support and contribution will not only help strengthen the Sun Valley community by empowering its residents to gain necessary life skills to provide for their families, but also to build community confidence and esteem as residents are able to translate new skills into jobs, and hope for the community through better nutrition and community involvement.

Funds donated to this page will go directly towards procuring the critical and much needed walk-in refrigerator/freezer to better and more safely store food for both the community pantry and the community restaurant. We are in desperate need of community support to make this dream a reality as soon as possible to begin the necessary process in time for the holidays.

Your support helps more than a restaurant and community pantry. You are donating hope for a better future to the residents of Sun Valley, the joy of knowing their children will have healthy and consistent meals to improve their ability to focus in school and improve their futures, and the sense of community that comes from seeing positive and impactful growth for families in need. The Sun Valley Kitchen + Community Center is extremely appreciative of any support you can offer towards our mission of serving and elevating the Sun Valley neighborhood and its residents, and our gratitude for your help will be reflected in the face of the families and children that will benefit from your charitable and thoughtful contribution.

Sun Valley is one of the oldest and lowest income neighborhoods in Denver, where over 94% of residents live in subsidized housing. The neighborhood is overwhelmingly families with children per the 2000 census, with 70% of all households families with children less than 18 years of age. The poverty rate in Sun Valley is five times higher than the City of Denver as a whole, with 71.5% of residents living in poverty compared to 14.3% of all Denver residents. Sun Valley is also the only neighborhood in Denver where minors outnumber adults. The mission of the Sun Valley Kitchen + Community Center is to serve at-risk children and low income families by providing opportunities for enrichment, education and community building. We have worked diligently to create an environment in which children and parents feel safe, supported, and connected, and our goal is to continue fostering unity within the community: among the families and among each of the organizations serving Sun Valley.
