Help our friend, Shooter

I thank you for taking the time read Shooter's (Scott Remy) story. On August 24th, Shooter was severely injured while working.  He was loading his truck and he felt something pop in his back.  He was in intense pain immediately. His employer told him not to go to the emergency room but to instead see their Worker's Comp doctor. The doctor told him to go home and take some Ibuprofen and go back to work the next day.

By the next day Shooter was in so much pain that he could not put on his own shoes.  He hesitated to go to the emergency room but with some pushing from his son and wife, he finally did. Once at the ER, Shooter was told that he had nerve damage and a disc in his spine was damaged.  They immediately told him that he needed consult with a surgeon.

Shooter’s family reacted quickly and let his employer know that he was in bad shape.  They provided everything requested by his employer.  The representative of the employer regarding the Worker’s Comp claim was less than compassionate. Through this long process she went as far as to tell him he needed to come to her office instead of going back to the emergency room as the pain from this injury escalated. It was apparent that they were doing anything they could to drag this out as long as possible.  In the mean time, Shooter’s family continued to send communication to his employer that included doctor’s notes stating he was not released to work.  (note: This should have been an obvious assumption now since he could no longer walk unassisted.)

To add to the stress that this family was enduring with Shooter’s pain and pending surgery that was being held up by the Worker’s Comp process, on September 16 UPS delivered a large very heavy wood crate.  In the crate was Shooter’s tools and personal items from work.  He did not even receive a phone call from his employer.   Later that day in the mail was a letter stating that he was fired effective September 12th for failure to show up at work. Also, that his medical insurance is canceled as of the last day of September. (note: It just happened to be signed by the Worker’s Comp rep)

Shooter and his family now face financial ruin due to the impending medical bills as they fight for his right to Workers Comp and wrongful termination.  As of today, they had to pay out a $1500 copay for his surgery.  He will have access to COBRA medical insurance at a rate of $792 per MONTH.  This means that SIX MONTHS of medical coverage will come in at $4752.  This does not include his follow up care copays.

If we could help them cover 6 months of health care, this $1500 copay and a little extra to get them through until he is recovered and can find a new employer, I know it would take a great strain off of them.

Shooter, and his wife Fretz, do much for friends, family and strangers.  When my husband was in the hospital for two weeks from an accident, Shooter was the first to show up.  Fretz called me daily through his hospitalization and his recovery.  They are involved in helping abused children through their personal service by empowering these kids to not feel afraid. They are the kind of people that are the first to give help but the last to ask for it.

I ask that if you have ever been asked to just pay it forward, please take a moment to make a small donation and share this funding opportunity to help this family as they pay it forward every day with their action and now they are in need of a small action by you.
