Who are we

Hello! We are Jessica Hood and Rachelle Miguel, co-founders of unladylike co., a Vancouver based theatre company. unladylike co. aims to make theatre that is female-driven in order to provide opportunities for those of us who identify as female, LGBTQ2+, non-binary, and people of colour, and to share our stories. Currently, we are producing Rachelle’s new play The [Organization], slated to premiere in November 2018. We are excited to present you with this new tale, but first we need your help!

We need funding

Earlier this year, we submitted a BC Arts Council project grant and although our application came highly recommended, the BCAC was unable to fund our project. We believe it is crucial for artists to be compensated for their time and talent. We need your support to pay for the cost of labour for these wonderful artists that are coming together. Your generosity will also go towards other production expenses, such as props/costumes, promotional materials, and insurance. The amount that we are asking for is $2500.

Artist Honorariums = $1,500

Props/Costumes = $200

Promotional Materials = $150

Insurance = $650

The inspiration

The [Organization] began as a series of anecdotes based on Rachelle’s quirky, and sometimes perplexing office experiences. As the project developed, it morphed into an exploration of how toxicity—of power, gender, sexuality, and politics—is perpetuated in the modern working environment. The four pillars that guide this exploration are: the awarding of physical masculinity, the encouragement of distrust amongst employees, the fostering of unhealthy competition and expectations, and the alienation of vulnerability. Through many drafts, table readings, discussions, and workshopping, the narrative for The [Organization] came into its current fruition.

The setting

The story follows Wren, a young Asian-Canadian woman, navigating through a poisonous working environment. Thanks to Urban Ink and the City of Vancouver, we are able to present this production in an actual office setting, and in doing so, we will bring the theatre experience into an everyday space. With this type of staging, we are invoking the intimacy of working elbow-to-elbow in small working spaces and allowing the audience to be, at certain times, both a voyeur and a participant.
