Help Paige Elsea graduate college

Donation protected
Let’s all help Paige graduate from college!

Hello everyone,
My name is Tony Kapta, you can almost make out my smiling face behind Paige in the photo.

For those of you who do not know me, I am the President of the Central Illinois Gem and Mineral Club as well as Past President of the Midwest Federation of Mineralogical and Geological Societies.

I have known Paige Elsea since she was a teenager and she talked her parents into joining CIGMC. I am proud to have her as my friend and really happy that she has decided to pursue a career in geology. She has worked very hard to get to where she is and now she needs our help to get her over the top.

Please read thru the information here and consider helping Paige to complete her dream of becoming a Geologist by making a donation to the field camp fund.

"Hello! My name is Paige Elsea, and I’m a senior undergraduate geology student at Western Illinois University. My goal is to get a job with a mining company, though I’m pretty much going to take what I can get when I graduate from college. I’ve heard of one-year contracts with Americore, as well as a quarry near Macomb that will need a geologist. So, I’ll consider the both of those for starting work. My long-term goals are to attend graduate school and get a master’s degree, though this will be after I’ve paid off a lot of my debt. I hope to eventually be able to teach college level geology."

Here is a video Paige made in 2008 about a new interest - geology!

The Last Boulder to Overcome – help Paige get to Field Camp in 2018
The Central Illinois Gem & Mineral Club is sponsoring this fundraiser to help Paige Elsea attend Western Illinois Universities Geology Field Camp for the summer of 2018. This is a requirement to complete her Bachelor’s degree in Geology.

It’s been a tough road for Paige and her family, but finally the last goal to complete is ahead of her in the summer of 2018. To fulfill the requirements for her Bachelor degree in Geology, she has to complete the 6 week field camp in the summer of 2018. As those of you from Illinois know, the state of Illinois is broke, and funding for many education grants has dried up. Paige has made it this far, please help her finish her degree completely and qualify for those geology related jobs out there!

Racing the Clock
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! There is limited time for us to raise these funds – We will need to reach our goal by April 30, 2018. Please consider donating to this cause, and help Paige overcome this last hurdle to her educational goal. Check out the thank you gifts  below, and consider helping Paige achieve her lifelong dream of becoming a geolgist.

The goal of the Summer of 2018

What  it is
The main goal of the field camp is to learn how to operate safely and efficiently as field geologists, learning how to navigate an outcrop safely, and how to study it effectively. There are nine separate field exercises that range from one to five days duration. Most projects include geological mapping and cross-sections. Field geology offers students the opportunity to apply what has been learned in the classroom to real geological problems.

If Paige cannot make this class, she will have to wait 2 years before this field camp is offered again!
This is a 6 week, 6 credit hour field geology course that must be completed to fulfill the Bachelor of Science degree requirements. The class will spend 60% of the summer near Red Lodge, Montana, and then work out of the University of Montana – Western near Dillion for the rest of the time. This will include camping for about 11 days during road trips.

Why she needs to go
In the field, rocks look very different than they do in textbooks or in labs. A valuable aspect of the field course is practice in approaching an outcrop and knowing what to do next. Even an incorrect solution to a field problem or a faulty interpretation of a geological event is of value because it prepared the way for a better solution or interpretation next time. A field course must stress individual effort and personal initiative. Paige will work in a team for safety, and a good deal of learning is derived from discussing ideas with classmates, however Paige’s interpretation of the geology developed from her own investigation will be the most value.

·        How the money will be spent

·        Tuition & Fees - $2400

·        Transportation Fee - $900

·        Room & Board - $1300

·        Total cost - $4600

·        The total basic cost estimate does NOT include the price of travel from Illinois to Montana, the mandatory medical insurance Paige has to have to attend this trip, camping equipment, personal items and some meals.

CIGMC Gem & Mineral Club is sponsoring Paige - a member of the club since she was 14. We have known Paige since she joined, and watched her interest and knowledge of geology grow every year thru her own investigations and study. She has been involved in almost every activity and event the rock club has done. She is a member of our club’s Board of Directors, and is our representative to the GESCI rock club in Macomb. Her Amber presentation given during the GESCI show was very concise and well researched. She has an outstanding geode collection, many of which she has collected herself, and she invested in mineral testing and identification equipment when she was in her teens.

Paige has been very active with geology events with 4H, Scouts and children at the rock shows. At Western, Paige is the President of the WIU Student Geology club.
Rewards!
If you make a donation, you will get a handwritten thank you card from Paige. If your donation is up to $75, Paige and her family will send you a thank you gift of an Essential Oil Sugar Scrub. For any donation over $75, Paige will send you a handmade gemtree. Please consider helping Paige get a great start to her geology career!
